The work, step by step
Not every job needs every step. The usual ones are:
- Start curing when the surface is hard enough to resist marring; use curing compound or a cover that holds moisture, like wet burlap or plastic.
- Dig out the driveway area, take out plants and soft soil, then compact the subgrade evenly.
- Set rebar or wire mesh atop chairs or blocks, holding reinforcement up inside the slab instead of letting it sit on the base.
- Put concrete into the forms in an even layer and screed it flat at the driveway thickness required.
- Bull-float the surface, and once bleed water has gone, add a broom texture.
- Form or saw-cut control joints so shrinkage cracks are guided, and put isolation joints at spots where the driveway meets existing concrete.
